R&B Urban MUSIC HISTORY:
Soul music has gone through a major transition from where it originated from to the modern sound of today. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame noted that this genre ìarose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and R&B Urban into a form of funky, secular testifying.î Soul music, as a whole, generally follows the same composition:

- Catchy rhythms, stressed by handclaps and extemporaneous body moves
- Call and response between the lead vocalist and the chorus
- Use of improvisation

This popular music genre originated in the United States in the late 50s and 60s, and typically combines elements of African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues, and jazz. Soul music became popular genre for dancing and listening to in the U.S. while recording labels such as Motown, Atlantic, and Stax were focused on influencing and creating chance in regards to the civil rights movement.

Soul dominated the U.S. R&B Urban charts in the 60s and many recordings crossed over into the pop charts in Britain and elsewhere. Genres like psychedelic soul (black rock) saw soul musicians embrace elements of psychedelic rock, especially its production techniques and drug influences, and infuse them with the typical sounds of soul.

During the 70s and 80s, soul went in the direction of quiet storm (a subgenre influenced by soft rock and adult contemporary), but during the 80s, soul hit a lull and was overshadowed by other genres like Hip-Hop.
