Real or Nonsense Word? APK

I have updated the look of the app. I changed all the images for each button.

I have replaced the buttons which had words to just pictures:
Clear All Letters is now a picture icon
Go Home is now a picture icon
Quit Centres is now a picture icon

I have added a Text to Speech component with a text box for the students to type in the word they have just created and then press the picture icon to hear the word. I have set the Text to Speech to English.

Real or Nonsense Word? is an app that can be used to help assess beginning and struggling readers. You can use this app for whole group instruction, small group instruction, one-on-one instruction and even in literacy centres.

Sometimes students will guess at words and pay little attention to the actual letters they are seeing, other than the beginning sound or having memorized the words rather than learning to sound them out. Practice with nonsense words can improve a student’s ability to decode individual phonemes and then blend them together to read. Students who can decide if the word is a real word or a nonsense word are starting to build their basic comprehension.

The teacher or the student will choose which centre they would like to do. Once in the centre, the teacher or the student touches the numbers in order to bring up random letters.

The student can write down each word on a recording sheet and decide if the word is a real word or a nonsense word. I have made recording sheets for each centre that you can download for free at the following website: http://primaryflynn.blogspot.ca/
