Description
▶Discover New Adventures With Comprehensive Trail and Ski Line Information
Whether you’re looking to navigate a ski tour, hike, run, mountain bike, or backpacking trip, we’ve got you covered. With over 650,000+ miles of trails. 4,000+ ski routes, 300,000+ rock climbs, and our maps will help you discover trails and adventures nearby.
▶Prep Better For Your Outings With Powerful Map Tools
We adventure in three dimensions, your maps should reflect that. With a 3D map you can visualize terrain, scout ski lines, and plan for hazards before you hit the trail. See recent conditions with weather forecasts, reports from other trail users, and get winter snow info from SNOTEL stations and regional avalanche forecasts right on your map. Map out custom routes seamlessly with snap-to-trail functionality, and use Waypoints Slope Angle, Slope Aspect, Trail Slope, and WildfireLayers to plan in more granular detail.
▶Navigate Without Cell Coverage
Save Offline Maps to bring your custom maps along when you're outside cell coverage on the trail. With the onX Backcountry App, you turn your phone into a handheld GPS maps device using your phone's internal GPS. Navigate offline by following the blue dot to always know how to get home–wherever home is that night. Leave a breadcrumb trail with Tracker to see where you’ve been and measure your key trip stats.
▶The Best Maps, Period.
With map data sourced from USFS, BLM, and NPS, our color-coded base maps help you easily find what you’re looking for. Scout the landscape and visualize terrain by viewing your maps in 3D, topo, satellite imagery, or a hybrid. Elite users also get access to private land owner data and recent satellite imagery to hit the trail even more informed.

Ratings and Reviews

2 ★ Pretty interface, but big issues with functionality, accuracy. Weather pop up is like a virus that won't go away. If offline it won't turn off, it covers much of the screen, voids other menus. Map is poor resolution. The trail colors and graphics are great, but are inaccurately located. I never had my position show close to the trail I was on. I compared directly to other mapping programs that were accurate. The program is far too dependent upon being online for smooth functionality. Needs work
4 ★ Overall, better than expected. In particular, the routing features and the quality of the 3D and satellite map layers are a plus. Unfortunately, it lacks the OpenTopo map layer that is often more accurate for trails and contain more map features such as backcountry campsites. If OnX has any plans to add the OpenTopo map layers, I'd like to know because GaiaGPS is better in this respect and might be the alternative I consider when my OnX subscription is up for renewal.
3 ★ So I guess I need to "go offline" to reliably track my hikes. So I'll up my previous review. I dislike the lack of info on a lot of them. Dislike tracking, as it only records distance, not elevation. Dislike constant updating to maps. Seems weekly. If forgotten the app may not work properly, but that may be my lack of going "offline" to track. I use all the big apps for hiking. Alltrails is great for current conditions,Gaia tracking info is superior.Onx seems to show the most hikes. I want all 3!
1 ★ Free version is useless, if you want off-road, Backcountry, hunt... You have to pay for each separately. Thank you for responding, I had off-road premium for 3 years and looked for a bundling option before canceling and going with another app. I looked for a bundling option on your website before responding today and could not find one, do you only offer the bundling option after a complaint?
2 ★ The app does not do what they claim it does. I downloaded it to be able to see public land boundaries. That feature worked only for a little while and then began working intermittently, and now, it doesn't work at all. This is on a brand new Google Pixel 7Pro. All the while they spam your inbox trying to get into your wallet. I highly recommend going onto the USGS website and ordering a paper map for $12. It shows everything this app falsely claims to show. The only thing this app is good for
3 ★ The offline functionality (including tracking movements and creating lines/waypoints, downloading maps, and just how it works offline) is nice, and I like that I can import/export GIS data. But for the price, I'd expect to get a better selection of maps and trails - especially USFS roads/trails that are included in AllTrails, Gaia, etc. for the same price. The features that are included in the different memberships are also misleading - depending on if you get premium or elite, Backcountry, Hunt, or Offroad - it's too compartmentalized and too expensive to get everything I want. Why does Offroad show USFS maps but not Backcountry? Why are property owners colored in Offroad and Hunt but not Backcountry? It's difficult to tell which features you'll get just by looking at the Play Store description - you won't get everything they describe without paying the "elite" price. I wish I'd realized this before paying for a full year subscription.
5 ★ I switched to Onx after using a couple different navigation apps and this is my favorite. It's reliable, accurate, and the one time that I actually had an issue, their support helped me almost immediately. They also have a series of YouTube videos with master classes to help you learn how to get the most out of the app. They're extremely helpful. Definitely recommend!
2 ★ I really enjoyed this all and would have left a great review during the year I had a paid subscription. Bummed to learn the hard way when said year of paid for service expires you DO NOT get to keep any of the DOWNLOADED and available offline data you've stored. All routes, maps, everything vanishes when the subscription expires. You'd think with an individual account and data downloaded and saved would remain available. Lucky I wasn't counting on an offline map to get me home safe. Super lame.
2 ★ Underwhelming, Not Useful There is no good way to search the map. For example, although the map has special icons for Frisbee Golf Courses, if you wanted to find the courses in your area you would have to pan the map. There is no way to filter by type. If you're looking for a hike there is no way to filter by difficulty, geographic area, etc. There is no way to create bucket lists or remove hikes you've already done from the discover page. No info on legality of camping. No exclusive content.
1 ★ No offense to this app but All Trails is much better. I never needed to pay to discover new local hiking trails on All Trails. I eventually bought a subscription from them because I love the app so much and it is quite useful while hiking new trails. You should ditch the free trial and let people experience your app for a little while longer. If it's good enough then they'll pay for it.
2 ★ Would like to subscribe but there are some critical features I'd like to see. When I click the discover button, it doesn't indicate how far the trail is from my location, nor can I see the city or state it's located in. There are coords you can copy and plug into gmaps but this is tedious and frustrating when you just want to find a quick trail. Without pressing Discover or knowing a specific recreational venue, the trail locations are not shown even when zoomed out.
5 ★ I tried and deleted this app 3 years ago and had been using another but a friend whom I trusted as savvy told me the interface had been updated multiple times since then and that he really liked it so I gave it another look and I'm really glad I did! It's now leagues better than it was or my other mapping app at this point. Totally worth the $30 a year subscription as you get the whole country of maps for that price. Not piecemeal like Garmin or most others.
2 ★ Not impressed. Sno parks are not identified. They're more foot trails then snow sport routes. Ive been a paying onyx hunt user since they started. Been trying to make 1 app work because im not paying for 2. I made it work by tracking and marking everything I can, on my own time. I sure hope onyx hears me out, because paying for multiple versions of this application, for me, IS RIDICULOUS
1 ★ The trail lengths listed for many trails in my area are WAY off. I mean by MILES. I clicked on the name of one trail I know to be about 5 miles each way, but was listed as something like 0.28 miles to see what the problem was. It zoomed to a spot on the map and said there weren't any trails in that area. This is in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness-federal land for which this info is freely available. There is no excuse for such drastic inaccuracy. How do I trust an app that can't get this right?
1 ★ AllTrails app is by far superior. From graphic, to easy of use of this app, is not very user friendly at all. AllTrails is a far superior app and requires no subscription. I have tried about ½ a dozen hiking apps and non of them can even compare to AllTrails. This app lacks so much that it wasn't even worth the time I wasted to check it out.
