Description

WHAT IS OPENVPN CONNECT?

The OpenVPN Connect app does NOT independently provide a VPN service. It is a client application that establishes and transports data over an encrypted secure tunnel via the internet, using the OpenVPN protocol, to a VPN server.

WHICH VPN SERVICES CAN BE USED WITH OPENVPN CONNECT?

OpenVPN Connect is the only VPN client created, developed, and maintained by OpenVPN Inc. Our customers use it with our business solutions, listed below, for secure remote access, enforcing zero trust network access (ZTNA), protecting access to SaaS apps, securing IoT communications, and in many other scenarios.

⇨ CloudConnexa: This cloud-delivered service integrates virtual networking with essential secure access service edge (SASE) capabilities such as firewall-as-a-service (FWaaS), intrusion detection and prevention system (IDS/IPS), DNS-based content filtering, and zero-trust network access (ZTNA). Using CloudConnexa, businesses can quickly deploy and manage a secure overlay network that connects all of their applications, private networks, workforce, and IoT/IIoT devices without owning and operating a multitude of complex, hard-to-scale security and data networking gear. CloudConnexa can be accessed from more than 30 worldwide locations and uses patent-pending technologies to create a full-mesh network topology for improved performance and routing to private applications—hosted on multiple connected networks—simply by using the application name (for example, app.mycompany.com).

⇨ Access Server: This self-hosted VPN solution for remote access and site-to-site networking provides granular access control and supports SAML, RADIUS, LDAP, and PAM for user authentication. It can be deployed as a cluster to provide active/active redundancy and for operating at high scale.

OpenVPN Connect can also be used to connect to any server or service compatible with OpenVPN protocol or running the open source Community edition.

HOW TO USE OPENVPN CONNECT?

OpenVPN Connect receives configuration information for the VPN server using a “connection profile” file. It can be imported into the app using a file with a .ovpn file extension or a website URL. The file or website URL and user credentials are provided by the VPN service administrator.

App permissions

OpenVPN Connect – OpenVPN App 3.5.1 APK requires following permissions:

Allows applications to open network sockets.

Allows applications to access information about networks.

Allows an application to receive the ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED that is broadcast after the system finishes booting.

Allows an application to read from external storage.

Allows an app to use fingerprint hardware.

Ratings and Reviews

2 ★ The new UI font used in the app is awful; bring back the previous font (Roboto), please. The color choices in app's theming and UI, negatively affects UX; the contrasts between colors for backgrounds and fonts have been chosen badly, especially in the light/default theme. Sometimes opening the app takes forever to load the profiles page, because of an unnecessary check at the app's startup, which requires an Internet connection. Also when selecting "Import File", the default tab should be "FILE", not "URL".

2 ★ I loved this app but once the new Android OS came out and locked up the permissions to media only you can't load the 4 needed files to make it work. Tried changing the 4 file suffixes to .mp3 and that got me through a quarter but could not get the 3 other needed files. Contacted Verizon, they tried, then they referred me to Samsung who tried but said it may be fixed in the next version of software. Developers of OpenVPN please change input routine to allow the 4 files to be .mp3!!!!!!

5 ★ This works perfectly if you want to use a lean simple app, and stay connected to the same server no matter if on wifi or mobile connection. Also note, this app should be for advanced users only. You will need to disable battery optimizations to avoid disconnects/crashes (this will cause more battery drain). And also select auto start/launch in the app settings, if you want it to connect after a reboot.

1 ★ The app worked great for the past 2 years when I had an imported profile for my home network so I could access my devices away from home. An update occurred last month that broke the ability to set a username and password to authenticate with and as a result I could not connect to my home vpn any longer. I instead used another openvpn app to import my profile and connect with.

2 ★ v3.2.6 broke ability to import profile. Changed OVPN port; went to update device configs. No issues on my devices. But wasted over an hour trying to find why wife's phone wouldn't work (all Android 11). Importing/parsing error every time, whether uninstall / wipe app data / etc. Finally noticed it wasn't requesting permission to files. Only could manually allow media only - but my other devices have all files permission. Oddly, her play store shows 3.2.6, mine show 3.2.5 (which works) as latest

3 ★ The app has been working great for the past years. An easy 5/5 for my basic use. However, recently (within 14 days roughly) it started crashing a lot. When I try to connect to a saved VPN the app might crash when I send a "p" for 2fa. I always have to clear the app cache to get it working again. EDIT: now it just crashes silently every time I connect.

1 ★ It used to work perfect - you demonstrated your excellency in perfection. After last upgrade, there is a problem with file access permissions. At first I did not know so I reconfigured the server. I am unable to import any profiles: the Android permissions allow access to media files only, but I do not wish to play any .mp3 files. To the developers team: please install it and see for yourselves. I am sorry I have to get your attention by one-star rating. I will change it back when it works.

5 ★ Nothing to complain about. Even though the protocols are not among the fastest, it just works... smoothly! Here are a few features I'd love to have in future versions: 1) whitelist certain apps ( if I don't want certain app to use the VPN, for example: Office/work related apps) 2) Auto connect on startup feature 3) Auto connect when I change networks

5 ★ Fantastic open source app. I have a feature request: if we can have temporary pause mechanism it would be great. For example, often times, I have to pause my VPN anywhere between 15 seconds to 15 minutes. However, I forget to resume the connection. If I can have a temporary pause which auto enables the resume function, it would be great. Thank you for all your hard work :) ❤️

2 ★ Works great... But not consistently I have a von server at home. I use a desktop app to connect my computer constantly. I would do the same with this app, and set my android VPN settings to always on, but the app regularly crashes when in the background and/or with the phone locked. Otherwise the app works great. Just not constantly, which defeats the purpose. Only missing feature: whitelisting of home WiFi (not even sure if that's possible though).

5 ★ By-Gingo this app is good! Best Android app ever in terms of user experience. Works flawlessly as far as I can tell. 'User friendly' (anyone else remember that concept?). Connection shortcuts for home screen! Richly configurable with lots of info. Only wish the windows client was nearly as pleasing. Only feature I would like is the ability to use the app to either launch other apps or URL's so it can ensure the vpn first; but that's just greedy of me.

3 ★ Great app! Works really well, I have a stable connection to my home network. This version however seems to have a bug. Whenever my screen auto rotates to protrait mode, it disconnects my connection and I have to manually restart it. That gets annoying when using it to watch movies. Would love to see it fixed!

1 ★ Has worked fine for years but something has changed recently and I can't import profiles to my phone. I get "Failed to import profile. Failed to parse profile: ca.crt. client.crt. client.key." The same files import on my desktop app so what has changed? Change it back cos it's useless now. Additional: It's a storage permissions problem. I can only set access to media files, so the app can't parse the cert files.

1 ★ The client is not stable on the Android platform when connecting through a wifi. It runs for awhile, then all communications with the network hangs. The data monitoring screen shows data going out but nothing coming in. Closing the app restores the Wifi connection. Loss of connectivity may be linked to the phone entering sleep mode and the app not reawakening fully. Their version of the app on Apple, however, is stable.

4 ★ Works great. I would give two UX feedbacks: 1. Does not remember the passwords for the VPN 2. When writing a password and revealing what it is, through the eye icon on the right, the pointer goes to the beginning instead of staying at the end of the password. Maybe both are on purpose, not sure, it would be great if those are available.
