2 ★ Somewhat useful to begin with, but I had to use different apps as well. Doesn't adequately cover voiced or combined sounds. Katakana testing was broken. Most of the memory aids they came up with are too convoluted to be useful. Also, the sensitivity of hiragana 'n' when doing the 'test all characters' is ridiculous! It's the easiest one to learn, but I have to input it a dozen times before I stumble on one it'll accept. I do think the price is appropriate for what you get, though.
1 ★ After completing Hiragana, I purchased the katakana pack. Half way through, I reset data and now cannot do katakana without going through all the Hiragana lessons again. This is quite an inconvenience. Aren't the two modules supposed to be independent? So now I have to repeat all the Hiragana lessons to get to katakana? Katakana is a seperate purchase and I should be able to see it at least, now I can't even see it. Poor design or intentional rip-off tactics, I cannot get a refund as well.
2 ★ This app is decent. They do something that is in my opinion a very backwards way of learning and could result in confusion as you progress while learning Nihongo. When "teaching" you they associate hiragana with random American words that have nothing to do with the hiragana. It is like telling a story from one book and showing pictures from another book. You also have to unlock each hiragana individually. I just don't find this app to be very helpful.
5 ★ Loved this app. It was so helpful for learning characters and stroke order. The stories are a good aid, but they can be hit or miss. I will never forget ya for yakuza -- finger, blood spurt, knife -- but there are others where just memorizing the shape is easier than trying to recall the story. I'm still using paper and pencil to cement everything in real life, but this will remain my go-to for quick drills.
4 ★ The story does help but the part where you write the characters is a bit buggy cause there are times where you make a wrong stroke and the app recognizes it as correct The price for the whole katakana-hiraga lesson is ok with me *the last upate of this app is 2018 btw
1 ★ Downloaded solely to learn katakana. Wasn't until after the first lesson of 7 hiragana characters that it told me I couldn't proceed and unlock more lessons unless I paid money. SHOULD MAKE THAT CLEAR FROM THE BEGINNING. Waste of my time.
5 ★ Great app for a beginner to learn Japanese. The stories and pneumonics help one learn and remember all the letters.
1 ★ Its incredibly frustrating when I know the hiragana/katakana but this app won't accept it because I haven't drawn the strokes in the EXACT order that they want.
5 ★ This app is amazing! It is also very fun to use too. It just sucks that I dont have money because you have to pay a 3-5 dollar fee for the rest of the courses. If you do have money though its absolutely worth it!!
5 ★ Great app for learning the Japanese Hiragana & Katakana alphabets. Uses the technique of learning by association which I found to be exceptionally effective. Highly recommended!!
5 ★ Truly an amazing app. I learned the whole hiragana alphabet in 3 days. I highly recommend, and it does have a 3-5 dollar paywall after the first lesson, but it is SO worth it
5 ★ Maybe seems a bit silly at first, but now being able to recall every character in 5 days - yeah it's really fantastic!
5 ★ Well, I'm almost 2 hours into the app. This has been spread out over the past 3 days. I've gone through all of the hiragana and katakana. As of this morning, I can read all hiragana without any trouble. I've just finished the katakana tutorial before writing this, and even though the mnemonics are a bit more difficult, I'm testing at about 80% (though I still need hints on almost all of them). I believe I should have them all memorized by the end of the week. I'm so glad I downloaded this app!
5 ★ Uses a great memorizing technique that helped me learn both hiragana and katakana in a matter of hours! It requires you to learn the stroke order as well, which not every app can say for itself. And when I ran into some trouble after resetting, the app developer was quick to help me resolve the problem.
2 ★ The stroke pattern guide is helpful, even if innacurate sometimes. Where this app struggles is the mnemonic devices. Instead of teaching each character individually, it attempts to break hiragana into "pseudo-radicals" similar to WaniKani. However, this style results in long, difficult to remember "stories" for each character with only loose connections between the "radicals" and the character pronounciation. For a company with heavy ties to Japanese language schools, this is a very odd choice.
