Faust is the name of two plays by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from 1808 to 1832.

Faust is inspired by Johann Georg Faust, a German alchemist of the 16th century, already a hero of the folk tale and played by Christopher Marlowe and Gottold Ephrem Lessing.

Goethe has long worked on the theme of Faust, and Faust is often considered the most important work of German literature. The first play, often called Faust I, was published in its final version in 1808. Faustus II is a continuation of Faustus I, published shortly after the death of the author in 1832. This is considered much more complicated.

Goethe said that the first part of Faust is the work of a "creature, embarrassed by passion, which can outshine the mind of a person." The second part shows a world less prone to passion. In Faust II, Goethe wrote Prologue, which is a persecuting question about the salvation of the soul. Thus, work is a parable about the suffering humanity torn between thought and action.

Goethe worked on the plan for Faust for 60 years of his life. The first part was written back in the 1790s, it was completed by 1806, the work was published only two years later and was reworked several times by Goethe himself during reissues (most recently in 1828). The second part of Faustus Goethe wrote in advanced years; she saw the light after the author's death, in 1832. Interesting fact: in 1886 the text of "Praafaust", which Goethe composed at a young age, was found.

Faust is considered one of the tops of German poetry due to the complex whims of rhythms and melodies.
