Barack Hussein Obama II1 (About this sound [bəˈrɑːk huːˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə] (? · I) in American English; Honolulu, Hawaii; August 4, 1961) is an American politician who served as the 44th President of the United States of America from January 20, 2009 to January 20, 2017.2 He was a senator for the state of Illinois from January 3, 2005 until his resignation on November 16, 2008.3 In addition, he is the fifth African-American legislator in the United States Senate, third since the era of reconstruction. He was also the first African-American candidate nominated for president by the Democratic Party and is the first to hold the presidential office.4

He graduated from Columbia University and the prestigious Harvard Law School, where he was president of Harvard Law Review.5 He subsequently worked as a community organizer and worked as a civil rights lawyer, before being elected Illinois state senator, performing that role from 1997 to 2004. He was a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. In 2000 he lost the electoral contest for a position in the House of Representatives of the United States, and after his previous failure, in January 2003 he announced his candidacy for the US Senate. In March 2004 he won in the primary elections of the Democratic Party, and in July of the same year he delivered the opening speech of the Democratic National Convention, which boosted his candidacy. Finally, he was elected to the Senate in November 2004, with 70% of the votes in favor.
