Description
Cloud Sync
The CalTopo app integrates with your existing caltopo.com account, and edits sync between the two in seconds. Plan your trip using CalTopo's best-in-class mapping tools and then seamlessly transition to your phone. Once in the field, sync your GPS track back to caltopo.com in real time, or drop markers and instantly share them with friends.
Amazing Maps
Access CalTopo layers not available elsewhere, including the MapBuilder series, land management, sun exposure, fire activity and custom terrain shading. Pre-packaged map files (subscription required) make for speedy offline downloads and simplified data management. An elevation data layer supports measuring profiles and point elevations, even when offline.
Real-Time Data
NOAA weather forecast visualizations and MODIS satellite imagery aid in-field decision making. Coming soon: SNOTEL, weather stations, streamflows and forecast grid data points.

5 ★ I have been using this app for a couple of months now in northern New England and I am generally pleased. Downloading tiles is very easy and quick compared to my previous app and the maps open quickly. Some areas of improvement are needed such as the ability to rename recorded tracks later on and the ability to download more map layers for offline use such as marine charts. I also wish the Mapbuilder Topo base map indicated the names of towns to make locating areas of interest easier.
1 ★ I downloaded and subscribed to this app because caltopo removed their maps from Gaia. Caltopo maps are good, their app is not... there are about a thousand reasons I could list why this app sucks, but let's start with the main two: downloaded maps don't work once I'm out of cell service area. And route planning is absolutely useless, even when done on a computer. These guys should cut their losses on having a stand alone app because it is hot garbage.
5 ★ Best Android mapping app. I have tried them all and nothing comes close! There is an ongoing cost if you use the advanced features, but this app is incredibly reliable which is of utmost importance in the backcountry if you are using it for navigation.
5 ★ Rescinding my prior 1-star review. This is an incredible app even with the lowest subscription level. Best of all, it's one of the few apps that does NOT sell your GPS coordinates to third parties. I apologize for my prior 1-star review.
5 ★ When Caltopo matured, I and my hiking friends promptly switched to it, for good reasons. I switched from Backcountry Navigator. Caltopo was written by people who actually use it to go hiking, and you can tell.
2 ★ clunky & slow to transition from one map area to another poor resolution for topo
1 ★ This is a virtually/limited/free/trial/demo. Wich means, basic features are limited or unusable. The actual/real app (with *additional* features) requires a subscription. Without it you will just have a very useless version of the app (ie no offline map, even those from OpenStreetmapMap, even if they are absolutely free to use for anyone). Marketing whorism as usual. Anyway the demo loads way too slowly and there's only a few (and ugly) online maps you can use.
2 ★ Overall decent, some caveats. The data availabe isn't the same in different countries. In Canada the Geology, Public Land, Parcel Data, and Motor Vehicle MVUM "overlays" don't exist. The scanned topos available in Canada are inferior to the ones available in the USA. Satelite imagery isn't available for download in Canada. Even with the inferior quality of the product in Canada, we are paying the same for a subscript as customers in the USA who have access to better base maps and overlays.

4 ★ Liking this better than GaiaGPS simply because GaiaGPS hasn't fixed their direction of travel pointer issue for over two years.AllTrails only shows trails not off trail land.
5 ★ Nicely done app, needs work but will give it 5* for the total experience of the Caltopo mapping website PLUS this app. Together they make an awesome combo, it's worth going on the site and getting a subscription. Then you have more features and you can print great maps, which you can export as GPX or even GeoPDF, then import those into apps like Caltopo here or Avenza Maps.
5 ★ This is a great app to have in your toolbox. The ability to print accurate maps to hand out to team members and create navigation training courses is a major advantage. Also, use it on your PC as well. Thanks, CalTopo, for an outstanding product.
5 ★ if you're serious about tracking in maps, caltopo is the one true app. no social media angle, but tons of technical capability, including many great layers, and the ability to edit GPX tracks graphically.
5 ★ Comprehensive Trek planning. I use it to make maps for leading the boy scouts deep into the wilderness. I make separate maps in laminate them for the kids in case they get lost, which is never happened yet. Simple, easy to use, comprehensive.
