The Book of Proverbs is the second book in the third section (called Writings) of the Hebrew Bible. When translated into Greek and Latin, the title has taken different forms: in the Greek Septuagint (LXX) became Παροιμίαι Paroimiai ( "Proverbs"); In the Latin Vulgate the title was Proverbia, that the English name is derived.

The book of Proverbs aims to teach to achieve the wisdom of God, to apply in our daily lives. It teaches discipline terms, a prudent life and do what is right, fair and decent. Proverbs is not merely an anthology, but a "collection of collections" related to a standard of living that lasted more than a millennium. It is an example of the biblical wisdom tradition, and raises questions of values, moral behavior, the meaning of human life and right conduct. The repeated theme is that "the fear of God (which means submission to God's will) is the beginning of wisdom." Wisdom is praised for its role in creation; God acquired above all, and through it gave order to chaos; and since human beings have life and prosperity, according to the order of creation, wisdom is the essence and the goal of religious life.
