This app gives you similar mapping options as you might know from Garmin or Magellan GPS handhelds.

The topographic maps were created by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).
Topo50 is the official topographic map series used by New Zealand emergency services.
How topographic information is used
Defence planning: New Zealand's defence forces use topographic information for planning military exercises and swapping information with international partners.
Location and routing: Search and Rescue, defence, ambulance, fire service, police and civil defence agencies use topographic information in a wide range of planning and operational situations, from natural disasters to community policing. Usage may involve mobile/field and control room situations, and the combination of topographic information with other data.
Land management: Topographic information is used by local government for regional planning and operations, and by power, gas and telecommunications companies.
In addition, LINZ maps are used for a great variety of purposes by businesses and government departments such as the Department of Conservation, and by recreational users such as trampers and tourists.
All topographic maps have additional labels for better readability at higher zoom scales. Maps are rendered with Atlogis® hillshading to enhance topography.

New Zealand and Islands (Antipodes, Auckland, Bounty, Campbell, Chatham, Kermadec, Raoul, Snares and Stewart Islands) at scale 1:50.000 and 1:250.000
Cook Islands (Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia, Manihiki, Mauke, Mitiaro, Palmerston, Penrhyn, Pukapuka, Rakahanga, Rarotonga, Suwarrow, Takute) at scale 1:25.000
Tokelau Islands (Atafu, Nukunonu, Fakaofo) at scale 1:25.000

1 ★ As others have described, I too paid a 1-off $20 for NZ Topo Maps Pro. This is no longer supported apparently. I get that things change but expecting existing customers to fork out for something new doesn't sit well with me. My version stops tracking whenever I take a photo. It either tracks in a straight line or stops tracking altogether - useless and dangerous. Instead I've changed to Doug's Maps, developed and maintained in NZ.
4 ★ This is my go to navigational map app. super helpful to have. Some features I don't use as they just don't work too well but the main thing...position on the map...goes great! Can run it in airplane mode which saves lots of battery. The location really needs to be loaded on the screen before you leave home, otherwise there is a good chance you won't get the detail you need.
4 ★ Excellent! Though ever since paying for the pro features it's started having an annoying issue where the GPS route recording will cancel when locking the phone, but only within the first minute or so, and only when out of reception range, and seemingly at random. Repeatedly restarting the recording will eventually work, but if there's a proper fix to this I would love to know. Otherwise the app is flawless and a must have for tramping!

5 ★ Sorry to read other people has trouble using the app. I have been using it for more than a year now in my Samsung S10 with no worries. Just completed a trip to the south island and previously downloaded the full island full resolution maps (took 20 Hours) and it worked off line perfectly. Love the option of adding up waypoints with photos. Now I can remember where my photos are from.
1 ★ I downloaded and paid for the annual subscription, however when I tried using the application for tracking a trip over the weekend it failed to track our progress which was of real concern, and also the direction indicator had some shadow effect rather than a arrow indicator, so we were confused about the true direction we were heading. As a result I requested a refund as I have no confidence in using it again and I need totally confidence when out in the bush.
1 ★ I was sure I paid for this app a couple of years ago and yet now I am getting annoying ads. Why is that?? Also now on the "free version" that I paid for and restricted way points etc. Absolutely do not recommend this app.
4 ★ Very good but: Track recording doesn't stop when I select "stop" but continues until I select "save" (that confused me for a year). Track recording doesn't start when I select "start" but always asks about battery optimisation (which I can't do anything about) and makes me select "continue". Track pause always seems to lose the plot and I seldom am able to restart successfully. Also, phones tend to have crappy GPS and it would be good if tracking ignored GPS lurches

5 ★ I am regularly in remote areas away from cell coverage. This app works extremely well offline as well as online. It has meant I do not need a GPS device from Garmin etc. The paid version of this app is even better with sharing a massive bonus. Easy to use. You will not regret purchasing the full version. Also the team at ATLOGIS in Germany are nice to deal with. Well done!
5 ★ An excellent alternative to carrying a GPS. Excellent features that have improved with the last upgrade. This app does everything I need for my work which involves spending multiple days in the NZ bush. Far superior to any other NZ topo maps app I have seen. Unfortunate that it doesn't seem to be available on Apple devices.
3 ★ it's just another map. Can't seem to add a waypoint unless I get pro version,? not going to happen as can already add waypoints easily with my other Map's.
3 ★ This app has been really nice to have. However after purchasing a year's map subscription it's still refuses to record more than 3 tracks and does not keep a running total on the odometer. It keeps telling me to upgrade to the paid version. I wonder if the developers will get back to me on this?
