Step 1: The legal profession
UK
In the UK, there are two major categories within the legal profession:
Solicitors: advice, notaries, bailiffs,
Barristers: lawyers;
You pay their fees (fees).
It is among these lawyers that judges are recruited: Examining Justice (magistrate), recorder (part-time judge), stipendiary Justice (lower courts), puisne judge (the High Court) or Lord Justice of appeal (the court of appeal).
In the USA
Across the Atlantic there is not the same distinction in Britain between council / notary and lawyer. A lawyer (lawyer general sense) is attorney / attorney-at-law (lawyer) or counsel / counselor / counselor-at-law (legal advice). They can be independent (single Practitioners) or work in the legal department of a company (to work in the legal department of a firm).
It is very common in the United States to go to a lawyer to draft a legal act (a legal document).
You can meet all these lawyers:
In the UK in a county court (county court) for Civil Justice (civil courts) or in a short Magistrate (first instance) to the penal (criminal courts).
In the United States in a criminal court (trial court), a juvenile court (juvenile court) or a short probate (court specializing in inheritance cases).
At the federal level, we find the same hierarchy of jurisdictions and within each State, including the Supreme Court (the Supreme Court), composed of nine Justices (judges of the Supreme Court).
In both countries there are of course the courts (court of appeal / appellate court).
