Several stray animals roam the streets of India. Our Research has lead us to believe that every day they go through pain and torture. Not just by the nature of their habitat but humans thinking of them as toys and tools to be used for experiments. And like all toys, they end up broken, rotten and are thrown away
Due to this several species are disappearing, losing their homes and acquiring and spreading diseases like rabies which according to our research causes 55000 people to meet their deaths due to rabies each year. The countries infected most with rabies are those with the most population of strays. These dogs are scavengers and eat anything they find for survival. This includes plastic, polythene and other garbage that can cause death of strays
We visited ‘People for Animals’, an Ngo for stray animals. There Mr Amit Chaudhry, president of PFA Gurgaon showed us the harsh reality of stray animals.
As the discussion about Animal Allies progressed, we learnt that cruelty to stray animals in India is something part of daily life and its citizens pretend not to see it. One example of such cruelty was a man in New Delhi caught on a CCTV killing a puppy.
There is no central agency for where cases like this can be documented. However, Non-Governmental Organisations such as People for Ethical treatment of Animals, SPCA, People for animals and more are working hard on these matters.
Cruelty is not limited to attacks. Several animal activists including Gauri Malekhi, a representative of People for Animals have said that animal abandonment is one of the main reasons for stray overpopulation. Animals are looked over as a matter of convenience, something you can through away when u feel like it.
Lots of Non-Government organisations are working hard to control stray dog population. However, miscommunication limits them to helping very little amount of stray animals.
The app is linked to our website, Facebook page and the PFA site. We went around asking for donations so that we could raise money for our app. We earned 4000 Rupees and uploaded the app on Google Play.
We shared our app, circulated pamphlets and collected donations; all from schools and school carnivals. This was all sent to PFA.
