The author of the book is Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Khatib al-Shirbini al-Shafi’i al-Qahiri, the jurist, interpreter, theologian, and grammarian. He was born in Sherbin in the Dakahlia Governorate, to which he is attributed. Then he moved to Cairo and settled there until he died.
He was one of the people of Egypt who unanimously agreed upon his righteousness, knowledge, work, asceticism, and piety, in addition to his abundance of asceticism and worship, very humble, and extremely modest. It was his habit to seclude himself from the beginning of Ramadan, not leaving the mosque until after the Eid prayer.
