The Tiziu (Volatinia jacarina) is a Thraupidae family bird that occurs in all regions of Brazil, being very common especially in altered vegetation areas such as grasslands. This bird is sexually dimorphic (different males to females), and the males have a pretoazulada nuptial plumage with white spots subaxilares, while females and young people have a brown color.
Their breeding season in the cerrado coincides with the rainy season from November to March, where the availability of resources is greater, especially insects, essential source of protein for growing puppies, and grass seed, the main food source for adults. At the end of the breeding season, most individuals withdraws from the region, returning only for the next breeding season (Antas & Cavalcanti 1988). However, in Pará, for example, playback can last all year (Sick 1997, Carvalho 1956).
During the breeding season, males are easily spotted doing "displays", vertical jumps during which flap their wings, showing the white spots and sending a very distinctive sound, which gave rise to onomatopoeia Tiziu name. These jumps appear to have a role both in the inter-sexual selection (beef heifers) and intra-sexual (competition between males), the ratio between males and females highly related to investment factor in leaps by the males (Veloso 2007 ).
