The history of the establishment of the Umayyad Dynasty came from the name Umayyad bin ‘Abdul Shams bin Abdul Manaf, who was one of the leaders of the Quraysh tribe in the time of ignorance. Entering the 40th year H / 660 AD, the political dispute that occurred among Muslims increasingly heated up, the peak was when the Caliph Ali bin Abi Talib was killed. After the Caliph was killed, Muslims in the Iraqi region appointed al-Hasan Ali's eldest son as the legitimate Caliph. Meanwhile, at the same time Mu'awiyah bin Abi Shofyan as Governor of the Syrian Province (Damascus) also named himself Caliph with Damascus as his capital.

 However, because the leadership built by Hasan bin 'Ali turned out to be weak and not strong in the face of various propaganda launched by the Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan camp. So, finally Hasan ibn 'Ali also renounced his authority and handed over the reins of power to Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan on the condition that after the leadership of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan ended, then the reins of Islamic power must be returned to all Muslims for further discussion with regard to the appointment of the next Muslim leader. But apparently, after the end of Mu'awiyah's leadership, he instead raised his son, Yazid bin Mu'awiyah to be the crown prince and at the same time replaced his system of government into an absolute monarchical kingdom. Since then, ie 660 AD / 40 AH the Umayyad dynasty, which had its capital in Damascus, began with Mu'awiyah as the founder of the Umayyad dynasty and its first Caliph. Mu'awiyah's political career began to increase during the reign of Umar bin Khattab. After Yazid bin Abi Sufyan died on the battlefield of Yarmuk, Mu'awiyah was appointed Governor in a city in Syria. During his time as governor of Syria, Mu'awiyah was keen to expand the Islamic territory to the borders of the Byzantines. During the reign of Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib, Mu'awiyah was in conflict with Caliph 'Ali to maintain his position as Governor of Syria. From then on, Mu'awiyah began to have ambitions to become a Caliph by establishing the Umayyad Dynasty.

 After deposing Hasan Ibn Ali, Mu'awiyah became the ruler of the entire Islamic empire. And in the period of its dynamics that stood for 90 years, the expansion of the Islamic territory became the main agenda most prioritized. Evidently, the peak of its success has brought Islam to become the Daulah State that is the most feared and has a very wide area. While at the beginning of its establishment, this Daula under the command of Mu'awiyah was able to conquer North Africa and it was at the same time an important and historic event during his reign.
