Gono-gini is a term known by most Javanese and surrounding cultures to refer to property that is jointly owned by husband and wife in marriage.

So, property produced by one of the partners; whether wife or husband, in their marriage, ownership is shared property. This is what is meant by treasure gono-gini or commonly referred to as joint property.

Therefore, if there is a separation between the two, whether separated from life, or also separated from death, the existing assets must be divided by 2; because indeed the property belongs together. So when it is no longer said together, ownership of the property goes back to each individual.

For example, if a husband divorces his wife, then the husband cannot bring the property which he considers his own property because of his own efforts. He must divide it by dividing 50 to 50, to give the ration to his wife.

Likewise if one partner dies. The assets left cannot be directly used as inheritance which is then given to the heirs. The treasure must be given half of the 50% to the couple who live as joint property. And the rest, then it is used as inheritance which is distributed to the existing heirs.
