Thus, hydroponics serves as a biofilter to absorb ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphorus, so that clean water can then be channeled back to the fish basin. Nitrifying bacteria living in filter media and associated with plant roots play a major role in the nutrient cycle; Without these microorganisms the whole system will cease to function.
