Description
ChordProg Ear Trainer takes a fresh approach to ear training. Develop your aural skills with real music snippets. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to listen to a song, recognize each chord by ear, then play them?
We are not talking about absolute pitch but relative pitch. This app takes a functional ear training approach to ear training. This is a practice tool that will help you pass that college/conservatory exam in no time. Practice to recognize chord progression in the context of real music.
ChordProg Ear Trainer is a call and response harmonic dictation app for the intermediate to advanced musician. Each audio clip is played back for you as many times as you like. You can even strip away all the melodies and only hear the chord progression in 1st inversion if you feel like you’re just guessing blindly at any given point
There are around 400 unique audio clips and more to come. Hours and hours of chord practice with real music.
This app have one short falling. It do not do a good job of teaching the concepts of functional harmony(yet). This app is a solo endeavor and I would love to spend more time developing this project. But doing it all on my own means that some thing aren’t prioritized. This app is great if You understand concepts like Key center, scales roman numerals, chord progressions and modes.(A more complete introduction to chords are coming)
Personally I don’t believe that you can develop perfect pitch. So this app tries to do its best to help you learn to understand the function of a chord in the context of a key. Ex. A G-major chord in c major have a dominant function. The same G-major chord in G-major have a tonic function. The “G major” chord have a different feel depending on what key we are playing in. It is this “feel” that this app tries to drill in by practicing recognizing chords with real music clips. What does a dominant seven chord feel like? After hearing dozens of different examples I feel confident that your intuitive musical understanding will sky rocket.
In the app each chord is represented by a button. It is your job to click the buttons corresponding to the chords of the audio clip that are played for you. This app uses roman numeral notation for each button. But if you want you can transpose the chord buttons to any key and even show the guesses in another key. So if you guess the chord progression C – F – G. You could (if you wanted to) show your guesses as G – C – D and practice transposing like that.
Learn to recognize the chord by how they relate to the other chords in the current context (key). It probably sounds more complex than it is so you shouldn’t feel intimidated. Learning to recognize chords in a relative manner is a skill any music student should have and it saves you so much time down the line.
Music theory is important. This app explores the chord part of the music theory puzzle. And I think that your musical apparition will skyrocket when you learn to pick the harmony of the songs you hear apart in your head. Being able to this will help you become a better musician. You’re music dictation skills will most likely improve because you will hopefully see how the melody relates to the harmony beneath.
I’ve done my best to help your chord practice become as enjoyable as possible so if you like the app please leave a review. Every good review helps me out so INCREDIBLE much and I love to hear from people using my app. It also motivates me to create more audio examples for you to practice with! I absolutely love reading the reviews 😊

5 ★ Phenomenal app! I love the goal and I really enjoy having a tool to retrain my ear in my pocket. Unfortunately, it won't log any completed sessions, and most importantly, attempting to open the first option under the "main game" menu option causes the app to crash instantly, without generating an easily accessable bug report. Other than that, good stuff all around. would consider modifying my review and purchasing the game if this gets fixed.
5 ★ This is THE most comprehensive ear training app I've tried. Unlike many others it is very easy to use and understand. One thing I think would help a lot is a reverb adjustment setting, currently the reverb coming out of my phone speaker really muddies up some of these exercises, especially interval recognition where the notes are being played at the same time. So much so that I'm tempted to use a different app for that particular exercise. Having something between Starter and Intermediate would b
2 ★ Unfortunately it crashes on any Minor and Advanced main game content, basically the premium features you are actually paying for works fine with Major. Not the cheapest and I feel like money has gone down the drain. Great idea but do not recommend as received no support despite contacting the developer via contact details provided.
4 ★ Overall the app is really good, but sometimes there is a mismatch between the chords you hear and what the app says is the correct answer, which is quite frustrating and basically makes those levels unplayable. Hopefully it will all be fixed at some point and then it will be a really really good app.
1 ★ I'm uninstalling this app. I've not even used it yet. so why am i uninstalling it? Because it's suddenly putting full-screen "reminders" and a time limit to upgrade to the pro or premium version. That's just annoying enough to convince me to uninstall, which I'll be doing after adding this review... This app is VERY suspicious because I didn't run it. I wonder what else its doing? Stealing my contacts or personal information?
3 ★ Great experience with the app until the chord progression main game stopped working (the best part!). It's clean and relatively easy to use, although a basic understanding of music theory and harmony is useful if you want to jump right into the games. One of the best overall ear training apps out there.
4 ★ I've struggled for a while to do harmonic analyses by ear. This app is helping me get better pretty quickly. It really helps that the training material is in the context of real music.
5 ★ This app is great. The only criticism I have is that there is too big of a gap in difficulty between the starter packs and the intermediate levels.
5 ★ Had a small issue and within 12 hours the developer fixed it and gave me a bunch of free stuff! THIS IS HOW DEVS DO IT RIGHT! <3 Thank you!
5 ★ Few minor glitches but overall a great app for ear training. Totally worth paying for (within the first week). I've learned more in the last couple months with this app than I did in a year of aural training in college.
4 ★ Best app I've seen for training to identify chords by ear. Very valuable for music students but might be a bit too steeply priced for others. As someone with absolute pitch, though, I wish the listening exercises were on more than the key of C. It would also give people practice identifying the tonic.
5 ★ Like my dude I haven't even used this app yet but I want to give it 5 stars just because the dev is a legend. If you look at reviews with technical problems, you will see that he has replied to pretty much all of them in a greatly helpful and respectful manner. Absolute unit of a man. If you're reading this, keep up the excellent work.
1 ★ just paid full price and the main game doesnt even work! crashes immediately!
5 ★ Bought the premium version some days ago. I have fallen in love with this app. Thanks a lot for creating it :) Also, can you reveal when is chordprog 2 coming out ?
1 ★ The app just crashes everytime. Paid for the full version. Very disappointed
