Description
Did your home dialect change over time? Our algorithm is based on historical data from the Survey of English Dialects. If it guesses where you are from correctly, your home dialect has probably remained stable over the past decades. If the guess is far off, however, it is probably because of dialect change.
- Can we localize your dialect based on your pronunciation of 26 words?
- Record your dialect and listen to recordings of other users and to historical dialect recordings!
- Choose a pronunciation variant, e.g. 'sheuf', and discover where in England it is used...or choose a place and explore its dialect!

5 ★ Ok chill people. How can an app determine your accent? It's a bunch of bots. Given how each person has a different accent it is impossible to give an answer. Please
5 ★ The app gives you 3 possible results. The top result was just 14 miles away. The other two weren't too far off either.

2 ★ It got my dialect absolutely wrong!
5 ★ I found it a fun quiz to do. It caused me to think about how I say things and how others do. The app did not place my dialect because I am from Southern England but lived in Glasgow, and moving has modified my accent - this app showed me how! I recommend reading press articles about the research to find how this app developed and continues to develop. Great that the app now includes Scottish, Welsh and Irish accents.
5 ★ What a great self reflexive exercise that makes you think about your language habits. I immigrated from Norfolk when I was 8 and grew up in Canada, so my accent is a dog's breakfast, but my linguistic choices still landed me within 50 miles of where my dad was born. Whether it nails down where you're from or not, it's an interesting way to look at some family linguistic archeology and the influences you internalize in your speech - I've suggested a number of English Canadians give it a go and see if it doesn't land them near where their people came from. My wife's mother's side has direct Irish roots and it pinned her Southern Ontario accent as Irish, which is what it was 2 generations ago. Those family influences remain in how we speak - very interesting!
4 ★ Although disappointed with my result (given outskirts of London when I live near Cambridge) I had fun. Maybe nuanced terms for speaking to friendly strangers could be used to pinpoint locations e.g. 'duck' - Stoke, 'Mate' - London/south east, 'chuck' - Leicester(?) as a few examples. However, the heat map seems pretty useless if the whole country is red
