How to encourage citizens to use their cars less and encourage the use of public transport, bicycle or walk? The City of Bellinzona launches Bellidea, an app that encourages the improvement of the mobility habits of its citizens, focusing on challenges, rewards and awards.
Reduce car use produces tangible benefits to the air pollution level, noise, traffic congestion, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and it is a priority at the city level. In recent years Bellinzona has been actively promoting the transition to mobility (as walking and cycling) and public transport, by setting up new zones 30 and improving frequency and interchange times between trains and buses. Regulations and structural interventions, alone, however, are not sufficient to produce a systematic reduction in the use of the car. Bellinzona has therefore chosen to assist them with an innovative approach: with Bellidea, exploiting the potential of new information and communication technologies (ICT) and the wide spread of smartphones, also drawing from the world of games.

The app Bellidea provides daily feedback on their journeys starting or ending in Bellinzona, also highlighting energy consumption and CO 2 emissions that result. Bellidea also stimulates define personal goals for improvement and to participate in challenges with themselves and other users, rewarding those who can use the car less and better. The more you use sustainable means of transport, the more you get Bellidea points, with which you can collect prizes from Bellinzona City and its partners (for example, tickets to exhibitions and shows organized in the city, tickets for public transport, discounts AMB on the bill).

Bellidea has been designed in close collaboration with a group of citizens, who between 2017 and 2018 participated in the workshop of ideas (living labs) Bellidea, under the coordination of SUPSI, Provelo Ticino and the City of Bellinzona. The activities of the living lab Bellidea are financed by the European ERA-NET SmarterLabs, who experiences a participatory and inclusive approach to facilitate the introduction of innovative technologies ( "smart city") in the field of mobility and transport.
