The construction of the square was initiated at the time of the new mining capital foundation (1895-1897). Situated at the highest point of the initial area of ​​the city (limited to the Contorno Avenue) the square was made to house the headquarters of the mining power, the buildings of the Government Palace and the first State Departments follow the trend of the time - eclectic style with neoclassicals elements. Over the years, the complex was getting buildings of different architectural styles.

Fountains Square

In the 1940s, the art deco style with coating of Christ the King Palace stone dust. In the 1950s and 1960s modern buildings were incorporated into the set, as the Niemeyer Building and Public Library, both designed by Oscar Niemeyer. In the 1980s, in post-modern style, it was inaugurated the building known as "Queen of Junk," which is being renovated to house the tourist service center.

The square also has gazebo and light source. The layout and the gardens, inspired by the Palace of Versailles, are an invitation to walks and hikes. This square, together with Raul Soares Square and Square Seven September, is among the most important city.

The architectural complex of Freedom Square was listed on June 2, 1977 by IEPHA. The measure includes, therefore, the buildings of the Civic Center - Palace of Liberty and former secretaries of state - and extends to the gardens, lakes, boulevards, fountains and monuments of the square as well as the facades of several buildings of its surroundings.
