Started in 1982 as an extension of the Southern Presbyterian Seminary (Campinas - SP), on October 3, 1986 was organized the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Rio de Janeiro that the Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil held in July 2006, was called the Presbyterian Theological Seminary Rev. Ashbel Green Simonton, named after the missionary founding pastor the church in Brazil.

The seminary is a Christian institution of theological education and confession of the Reformed faith, jurisdiction over the Presbyterian Church of Brazil which aims to be a reference to Presbyterianism, provide solid biblical and theological knowledge, forming pastors who will supply the sacred ministry in the IPB and also enabling students, men and women, a conscious and mature Christian life.
