Description

This app contains a poetic hymn from the Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism's holy Scripture. Such hymns are written in raag or raga, a classical Indian musical system. The Sikh code of conduct advises that kirtan (songs of praise) be performed in raag (or raga) according to Sikh tradition. "Raag Soohee" like this one are favored for the morning hours, and are said to inspire happiness and fulfillment. This particular hymn celebrates God as one's Beloved Husband Lord and the soul as His beloved bride.

What is Sikhism?
Sikhism is a religion that emerged in the ****** region of India in the 15th Century. It is a unique, revealed faith, based on fundamental beliefs that include constant remembrance of One Creator God, equality and oneness of all mankind, selfless service, and honest conduct and livelihood. Sikhism includes some aspects of Hinduism, such as reincarnation, karma, and Nirvana, along with some aspects of Islam, such as monotheism. However, Sikhism is distinct from Hinduism and Islam.

The Sikh holy book, Shri Guru Granth Sahib, contains compositions by six Gurus, namely Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan, and Guru Teg Bahadur. The hymns are arranged by the thirty one ragas (musical forms) in which they were composed. They were originally written in many different languages: Persian, medieval Prakrit, Hindi, Marathi, old Panjabi, Multani, and several local dialects. In addition, there are Sanskrit and Arabic portions. The text is thus extraordinarily difficult to translate. The translation presented here is the Khalsa Consensus Translation, which is highly regarded by scholars.
