The subject of Catalan language in general, and the accentuation of Catalan in particular, are often difficult during the Primary stage of the students. Spelling is very important and knowing how to accentuate correctly is crucial to successfully pass the Catalan subject in school and master writing in adulthood. However, it is common to find it difficult to use accents, so you need to know the rules and practice with exercises. Boys and girls often see language exercises as boring and thanks to this app we can encourage them to learn syllables. Through technology, we will be able to learn the basics of accentuation and spelling of Catalan: syllables.

The 'Play with the syllables' app is a tool for families, teachers and students to practice accentuation while having fun. In fact, the "data" section of the app allows us to know the results of the boy or girl who uses the application. There we will find statistics of successes and failures, total games played and the percentage of effectiveness so that we can keep a good track of its evolution and reinforce, if necessary, some theoretical aspect.

The application has 5 game modes of increasing difficulty that use interactive dynamics and the concept of "gamification" to transform the learning of Catalan and the separation by syllables in a fun game. Here are the 5 game modes included in the app:

🎯 Memory: We will have to match pairs of words, separated and not separated by syllables. In addition to exercising memory, the student becomes familiar with syllabic divisions.

🎯 Separate: With a time limit, we will have to choose which of the options shown to us has the syllables separated correctly, practicing the strokes of the voice and paying attention to the exceptions.

🎯 Identify: Now, we need to identify which is the stressed syllable of a word. Sometimes it will be easier because the word will have a graphic accent but other times we will have to work harder to find what the tonic syllable is.

🎯 Classify: We have already learned to separate by syllables and identify the tonic, so it is time to classify the words according to whether they are sharp, flat or slurred.

🎯 Select: If we already master the classification ... let's face it six by six! We will have to find the 6 words of a certain category among a total of 12 different words.

After making a game of a game mode, there is always an explanatory screen where we find out if we were right and, if not, we can see why we were wrong. In this way we consolidate the content of separation by syllables and we can improve while maintaining the motivation for the challenge it poses. In case of error, the correction is always displayed.

The application database has a collection of hundreds of words suitable for boys and girls that are a good example of language, so they allow us to practice the identification of gaps and diphthongs, check which words are accented and get acquainted with Catalan.

The design of the application is adapted to primary school students and the children's aesthetic is attractive, with visual stimuli that make learning Catalan an experience of the most entertaining! For this reason, 'Play with Syllables' does not contain any annoying third-party ads and does not collect any personal data.

This app was born as a result of the Research Work of Pol Villaverde, a young student passionate about technology and has been put into practice at the BetàniaPatmos School in the classrooms of 5th Primary with good results.
