This is a mobile application created under the project LIFE 13 NAT / ES / 001130 FEEDING SCAVENGERS, "Habitat restoration of natural feeding black vulture and other carrion birds in Central Spain", an initiative coordinated by the Foundation for Biodiversity conservation and Habitat (CBD-Habitat Foundation) in partnership with the Ministry of Development and Environment of the Junta de Castilla y Leon and the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y León. The Life + Nature projects are co-financed by the European Commission in order to promote conservation actions in the field of Natura 2000.

LIFE FEEDING SCAVENGERS project or bird feeding carrion, whose main objective is to favor the carrion birds of community interest: black vulture, Spanish imperial eagle, vulture, red kite, black kite, golden eagle and griffon vulture, restoring habitats feed nature of these species and to support extensive livestock farming.

The application is divided into three parts: the first information of the project itself is offered, with objectives, activities, geographical area and contact information for farmers and other stakeholders. The second is a simple and practical identification key eleven species of raptors medium and large, accompanied by a guide with descriptive texts, their biology and ecology and photographs. Finally, it has a guide with texts and images of indigenous livestock breeds of Castile and Leon, many of them endangered, dividing by species: cows, horses, donkeys, pigs, sheep and goats.
Herbivore and carrion birds maintain a mutually beneficial relationship for millions of years. Some provide them with food, others reduce transmission of the disease by eating their corpses. Ranching has followed these same patterns of behavior, until the socioeconomic changes in rural areas, along with legislation that prevented the permanence of cattle carcasses in the field following the known "disease mad cow" have deeply affected populations of many of these Scavengers. But European regulations, since 2009, and autonomic, from 2013, again allow extensive farms that meet certain sanitary requirements and are located in areas Protection for Power Scavengers Community Interest ( ZEPAEN) are allowed to leave animal carcasses as food for carrion birds. This European conservation project helps the recovery of the old alliance, supporting livestock to conserve nature.
The specific objectives of this initiative are to get the carrion birds of community interest: black vulture, Spanish imperial eagle, vulture, red kite, black kite, golden eagle and griffon vulture, sufficient and affordable food, favoring the maintenance of their populations . Facilitate recolonization of historical breeding areas of black vulture. Assist the farmer in the management of dead animals on their farms. Contribute to the revaluation of ranching and show their importance for the production of quality food and biodiversity conservation.
The project partners will work together with farmers for the latter to leave the bodies of their livestock in the field, meeting all the requirements of health and environmental legislation. Noting that this food is consumed by the black vulture and other carrion birds and adjusting the amount deposited to the real needs of these species feed. In addition it sensitizes and informs society about the importance of ranching for conservation of our most endangered carrion birds.
